New Wax Reporter Kyanna Vassell explores Toronto’s deep history with the genre from its early years all the way through to the current chart dominance of artists like Drake and producers like Boy-one-da.

This week’s artist spotlight is on Vaz.  Born and raised in London England, Vaz moved to Toronto in 2008 after getting his degree in Economics Business and Finance.  In 2012 Vaz quit his banking job to pursue his music career full time.   While playing music since the age of ten Vaz claims that it has always been his passion and his main channel of self expression.  Our reported Zemina Meiji met up with Vaz to discuss his art and career path.

Toronto’s Weaves was formed by a union between singer Jasmyn Burke and Morgan Waters. The band has a unique off kilter, yet catchy, sound that blends a wide variety of genres around Burke’s distinct R&B vocal style. Weaves have recently released a self-titled EP and three highly creative music videos that have been steadily generating internet buzz. New Wax correspondent Thomas Millband recently spoke with Burke.

From its humble beginnings as a cocktail lounge for the Waverly Hotel to one of Toronto’s top blues bars, The Silver Dollar Room is still shining after over fifty years. The Spadina and College landmark has been a go-to place for live blues, bluegrass and rock music since it opened on the January 1st, 1958. In order to reach a wider audience and compensate for the declining numbers of blues listeners in the new millennium, the club started increasing its bluegrass, folk, roots, indie, pop and rock based performances. New Wax reporter Debra Shlegel delves into the history of The Silver Dollar Room and its influence on Toronto’s music scene.

This week’s artist spotlight is on Santini and Tellez, an electronic music duo making waves with their new release and DJ set on the Canadian label, Thoughtless Music. The duo began producing music together in 2010 and have created a diverse range of productions that have crossed multiple genres of electronic dance music. Santini and Tellez spoke with New Wax Show reporter Sarah Walsh about their current work and success in Toronto and around the World.

This week’s artist spotlight is on Toronto based guitarist, producer and songwriter, Adrian X. Writing and producing music for over a decade, Adrian has released a solo album of instrumental composition titled, Soulgazer, under his own production company Ecclectic Electrix.

New Wax correspondent Sarah Walsh sat down with Adrian X to tap about his exciting career and new record.

Dissatisfaction and frustration are key elements of punk rock. Add a female voice and the result is The Beverly’s. An up and coming Toronto punk slash grunge trio, are moving the needle of intensity. Susan Burke, Audrey Hammer and Joanna Lund are the three ladies the vigor and d.i.y attitude that punk music is known for.  The band’s hard vocals and sound was a way to vent on the general malaise of life. After three years and more personal reflection added to their sound, the result is their recently released a self-titled EP this past February 11th. New Wax reporter Debra Shlegel recently interviewed the band as they talk about their release and what’s coming up for the trio.

Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings are the spearheads of a revivalist movement that aims to capture the essence of funk/soul music.  Shunning modern digital recording methods in favour of using traditional analog recording equipment, Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings are determined to keep the 60’s & 70’s style sound to their new album Give The People What They Want.

After a recent battle with pancreatic cancer, Jones decided to forge ahead and focus on thier music with the band. With their most recent cameo in Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street, the future of Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings is definitely worth getting excited for.

CHRY’s Music Director Ian Gormely recently spoke to Jones about the state of R&B music and her take on the current trajectory on modern her take on the Grammy Nominees.

Funk and Groove can be used to describe the seven-piece Brooklyn based team, Lettuce. The band have been movin’ people out of their seats for twenty years and are currently on tour promoting their third studio album, Fly.

Camillie Leung sat down with the group to talk history, their tour, and their future.  You can catch Lettuce in Toronto on February 22 at Pheonix Concert Theatre.
