Colombian born Toronto jazz musician Natasha Roldan is vocally influenced by traditional Latin American and European music. She was live in studio performing “No Apologies”, “Love Swing”, and “Regret” off her debut EP, No Apologies. After her set, Roldán sat down with New Wax for an exclusive interview to discuss the release of the debut EP and her development as a jazz singer in the city.

This week’s artist spotlight is on Vaz.  Born and raised in London England, Vaz moved to Toronto in 2008 after getting his degree in Economics Business and Finance.  In 2012 Vaz quit his banking job to pursue his music career full time.   While playing music since the age of ten Vaz claims that it has always been his passion and his main channel of self expression.  Our reported Zemina Meiji met up with Vaz to discuss his art and career path.

Next Music From Tokyo is an an underground rock showcase that happened at the Rivoli on May 16th and Lee’s Palace on May 17th. It is a showcase featuring 5 bands from Japan. The event is funded and run by one investor who has generously paid for all the bands to come and play and it gives our city’s concert goers a chance to see what Japanese musicians are up to and how they perform their music live.  New wax reporter Debra Shlegel put together this next segment about the Next Music From Tokyo showcase.

Fade Chromatic, a Toronto based indie rock band making waves in the local music scene out with their new release Careless//Madness. The group layers melodic pop vocal hooks with heavy drums, guitar, and bass. Influenced by many area of rock, including punk, indie, and alternative, the band has continued to develop their sound since their 2011 incarnation. Fresh off their May 9th performance at Rancho Relaxo, New Wax Show reporter Sierra Sun caught up with Fade Chromatic to discuss their current EP.

Modern Baseball’s nostalgic mix of pop-punk and emo has catapulted the band to the forefront of the current crop of melodic punk groups spilling out of America’s North-East. Their second album, You’re Going to Miss It All, has received rapturous reviews from critics and landed the band a coveted opening slot on tour with fellow Philadelphia crew the Wonder Years. Ian Gormely caught up with the band’s singer, songwriter and guitarist Brendan Lukens ahead of their Toronto gig at the Phoenix.

The members of Spring have been playing music together in various forms for more than six years, and are now some of the busiest tour-hardened musicians in East Vancouver’s vibrant music scene. Spring’s music is based on the heavily processed electronic sounds of SSRIs, joined by acoustic instruments and vocal harmonies which create a spatial duality that bounces between the familiar and the unexplored. New Wax Reporter Debra Schlegel spoke with Spring about their recent changes and the future plans for the group.

The duo began producing music together in 2010 and have created a diverse range of productions that have crossed multiple genres of electronic dance music.  At a time when so many other artists are hauling their laptops on stage, Toronto quintet Teenage Kicks delivers a back-to-basics rock sound with guitar, bass and drums. This year, the band released their second EP, Be on my side, and have been busy touring southern Ontario.

Ian Gormely caught up with the band’s singer guitarist Peter Van Helvoort a few weeks back ahead of the band’s final show with his brother, bass player Jeff Van Helvoort, and guitarist Patrick Marchent.

This week’s New Wax Highlight is on Toronto’s 14 piece collective, self described as, “Balkan-Klezmer-Gypsy-Punk-Super-Party-Band,” Lemon Bucket Orkestra. Their explosive take on Balkan/ Gyspsy/ Kelzmer music that attracted the most adventurous souls in Toronto’s musical community, with their EP, Cheeky.
